Rooted in Heritage, Growing with Every Generation
Skyland Camp & Retreats is more than a place; it is a living story on a 75-acre mountain property just west of Asheville and near the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Established in 1917 by Susan Courtney 'Granny' Harris, our camp began as a bold vision: to create a sanctuary where girls could be their authentic selves. Now in its fourth generation of family stewardship, Skyland remains small by design while expanding programs to give adult women the same opportunities to experience the magic of summer camp. Our mission is to inspire wonder, joy, connection, and growth, whether through our all-girls summer camp, grown-up girls and women's retreats, equine programs, or private event rentals. At Skyland, guests experience a rare blend of historic charm and high-touch hospitality, making every visit a return to authentic, lasting values.
Our Story
A Legacy of Leadership and 'Rustic Luxe' Mountain Hospitality
The Skyland journey began in the early 20th century when Granny Harris purchased the Skyland Home Hotel before women even had the right to vote. Her spirit of innovation and adventure became the foundation for generations of campers and leaders. For over 100 years, Skyland has been owned and operated by the same family, with each new generation nurturing traditions and growing new branches. Today, Sherry Brown carries forward this legacy, guided by the same values that shaped her great-grandmother’s vision. Skyland features the Victorian Lodge, 1920s-era screened sleeping cabins, and the Ranch House, blending rustic character with modern comforts. The 'Rustic Luxe' experience is felt in every detail, from the traditions of climbing through Victorian windows on summer nights to the family-style meals served at long tables. Skyland’s multi-generational stewardship is a promise: every camper, guest, and group is welcomed as part of the story, building memories that echo across decades.

Our Mission

As an American Camp Association accredited institution, we commit to the highest standards of health and safety, providing families with peace of mind. Skyland’s programs include a girls-only summer camp that fosters grit, independence, and lifelong friendships, as well as adult retreats that help women reconnect with themselves, each other, and the mountains. Our equine offerings, including Equine Facilitated Learning and pony parties, teach boundaries, confidence, and communication. Special events and full-property rentals invite groups to experience private access to our historic grounds. Each program is designed to nurture community, leadership, and joy.
